Uma comissão de 10 críticos do AVN gastou perto de um mês e meio compilando nomeações em mais de 130 categorias reconhecendo empresas, talento, técnicas e profissionais criativos em todos os aspectos da indústria do entretenimento adulto.
Várias novas categorias foram criadas para refletir as tendências do mercado em constante evolução do business, esses incluem Best Star Showcase (um filme centrado em torno de uma performer feminina incorporando o nome dela no título e com ela em todas as cenas de sexo), Best Romance Release (um título com um tema de romance/história comercializada especialmente para mulheres ou casais) e Best Transsexual Sex Scene.
Além disso, certo número de categorias anteriormente conhecidas foi reintroduzido aos prêmios que o mercado expandiu em conformidade. Os que voltaram 2013 são de Best New Production Company e Best Continuing Series (que era conhecida anteriormente como Best All-Sex/Vignette Series.)
Terminando a limpeza, Best Featuring foi renomeado para Best Drama, a fim de complementar adequadamente Best Comedy e Best All-Sex Release – Mixed Format foi renomeado Best Wall-to-Wall Release para esses lançamentos que misturam gêneros de cena entre gonzo, vinheta e o sexo.
